Quick Tips

• Keep the mic gain stable for consistent readings.
• Disable enhancements (noise suppression / AGC) if you need raw levels.
• Use the Calibration Offset to match a reference meter if available.

Understanding dBFS vs dB SPL

Most browsers expose microphone level as digital amplitude, which maps to dBFS (decibels relative to full scale). dB SPL (sound pressure level) requires calibration and device-specific microphone sensitivity.

Best practices for consistent readings

  • Keep the microphone gain fixed and disable automatic gain control when possible.
  • Measure at a consistent distance from the sound source.
  • Use the same device for comparisons to reduce hardware variance.
